Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). (Please refer to the Research Activity Page for the school.)  Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation. Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Kansas State University, 1972. Past President of IEEE Neural Networks Council.  Author of over 100 technical papers.  Co-editor of Neural Network PC Tools, published by Academic Press in 1990. Co-author of Computational Intelligence PC Tools, published by Academic Press Professional, 1996. Co-author of Swarm Intelligence, published by Morgan Kaufmann in 2001. Program Chairman of the 2003 IEEE Swarm Intelligence Symposium.  Fellow of the IEEE. Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.  Has been awarded four U. S. patents.  Co-founder of Computelligence LLC.

Areas of interest

  • Biomedical data acquisition and analysis; pioneered use of neural networks for a number of biomedical applications, including EEG spike detection
  • Computational intelligence (neural nets, fuzzy logic, evolutionary computation); co-developer with Jim Kennedy of the particle swarm optimization concept
  • Applications of actigraphy to neurology, sleep, and human performance assessment
  • Electric and hybrid vehicle technology, including Formula Lightning racing
  • Logistics and mission planning optimization
