PhD Application Checklist for International Applicants

(For international applicants)

The items listed in the following are required for your application for admission to a PhD engineering program. Use the following as your Checklist to apply and to gather the required supporting materials.

Graduate Application for Admission:

  1. Mechanical Engineering PhD applicants:  Complete the Mechanical Engineering (ME) "Additional Information Form". Important: Save the completed form as Adobe Pro pdf in print mode and upload to the IUPUI graduate application prior to submission of the online application.

  2. Complete and submit the IUPUI Online Graduate and Professional Admissions Application.

  3. Graduate application fee of US$65. Pay online with a valid credit card.

  4. A photocopy of your current visa and/or I-20 documents, if you are currently residing in the U.S.A.

Academic-related Supporting Materials:

  1. One (1) official final academic transcript (not photocopied/scan copies) in official language of home country, from all colleges/universities attended. (Do not include secondary or high school transcripts).

  2. One (1) official English translation of final academic transcript, if official language of home country is not English.

  3. One (1) official copy of undergraduate (Bachelor's) and graduate (Master's) degree diplomas received in official language of home country.

  4. One (1) official English translation of undergraduate (Bachelor's) and graduate (Master's) degree diplomas received, if official language of home country is not English.

  5. Official TOEFL or IELTS scores must be reported directly to IUPUI from the testing agency ETS. (IUPUI institution code: 1325.) Refer to information sheet Frequently Asked Questions for minimum score details.

  6. The GRE General Test is required. Official GRE scores must be reported directly to IUPUI from the testing agency ETS. (IUPUI institution code: 1325.)

  7. Three (3) recommendations for graduate admission are required.

    • Persons writing your recommendations should be your present or former professors/instructors, advisors, project leaders, or managers/supervisors who you report to professionally, and are expected to comment on your academic performance, intellectual abilities, and scholastic aptitudes. Recommendations from friends, acquaintances, peers, or family members/relatives are not acceptable. It is strongly preferred that recommenders complete and submit web-based recommendations within the online application. Instructions are provided in the online application on how a recommender may complete and submit an online recommendation.

  8. A Statement of Purpose (upload to the online application). A 500-word essay summarizing your academic background, research contributions, and professional experience if relevant, and your educational goals and objectives. In addition and very importantly, describe and highlight your specific area/s of research interest and focus in graduate study.

Financial Document/s:

  • If you have a government or institutional scholarship: Provide an official letter from the sponsoring agency confirming the scholarship and specifying the amount of the award.
