Applying for Admission to PhD Engineering Programs

Purdue University PhD engineering studies available at IUPUI:
To apply for admission follow the directions provided that are specific to each program below.
(PhD engineering programs are administered at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.)

IUPUI does not offer the Direct PhD program in engineering. Admission to the Direct PhD program is offered only at the Purdue University, West Lafayette campus

Biomedical Engineering
To apply for admission to the PhD program in Biomedical Engineering, you must complete the Purdue University online application; select West Lafayette campus and apply directly to the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette. Electrical and Computer Engineering

Mechanical Engineering
To apply for admission to the PhD program in Mechanical Engineering to study at the IUPUI campus click on the following that applies to you. Applicants wishing to apply for admission to the PhD ME program at IUPUI must be currently earning or have earned a Master's degree. (IUPUI does not offer the Direct Ph.D. program in engineering. Admission to the Direct Ph.D. program is offered only at the Purdue Universtiy, West Lafayette campus.)

PhD Application Checklist for Domestic Applicants

(For U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents)

The following items are required for your application for admission to a PhD program. Use this Application Checklist to help you gather the necessary supporting materials for your application.

Application: Mechanical Engineering PhD applicants complete and submit the following:

  • Graduate application fee of $60. Pay online with a valid credit card.

Application Supporting Materials:

  • One (1) set of official academic transcript is required from all colleges/universities attended. Photocopies or scanned copies of transcripts are not acceptable. 
  • A certified copy of Bachelor's degree diploma awarded, only required if degree conferred is not posted on final transcript.
  • Three (3) recommendations for graduate admission are required. Persons writing your recommendations should be your present or former professors/instructors, advisors, project leaders, or managers/supervisors whom you report to professionally, and are expected to comment on your academic performance, intellectual abilities, and scholastic aptitudes. Recommendations from friends, acquaintances, peers, and family members or relatives are not acceptable. It is strongly preferred that recommenders complete and submit web-based recommendations within the online application. Instructions are provided in the online application on how a recommender may complete and submit an online recommendation.
  • A Statement of Purpose (upload to the online application): A 500-word essay summarizing your academic background, research and professional experience if relevant, and your educational goals and objectives. In addition and very importantly, describe and highlight your specific area/s of research interest and focus in graduate study.
  • The GRE General Test is required. Official GRE scores must be reported directly to IUPUI from the testing agency ETS. (IUPUI institution code: 1325.) Refer to the info sheet "I Need Information" for details about graduate admission test.

Required for Naturalized U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, and including U.S. citizens who have completed secondary and/or post-secondary education in a non-English speaking country:

  • Proof of English Language Proficiency: If you are either a foreign-born naturalized U.S. citizen, a U.S. permanent resident, or a U.S. citizen who have completed secondary and/or post-secondary education (Bachelor's or Master's degree program) in a country where English is not the first or official language, you are required to take the TOEFL or IELTS  test to apply for graduate admission.
  • One (1) photocopy of your U.S. permanent resident card or U.S. passport.

PhD Application Checklist for International Applicants

(For international applicants)

The following items are required for your application for admission to a PhD program. Use this Application Checklist to help you gather the necessary supporting materials for your application.

Application: Mechanical Engineering PhD applicants complete and submit the following:

  • Graduate application fee of $65. Pay online with a valid credit card.

Application Supporting Materials:

  • One (1) set of official final academic transcripts (not photocopied) in official language of home country, from all colleges/universities attended. (Do not include secondary or high school transcripts).
  • One (1) set of official English translations of final academic transcripts, if official language of home country is not English.
  • One (1) official copy of undergraduate (Bachelor's) and graduate (Master's) degree diplomas received in official language of home country.
  • One (1) official English translations of undergraduate (Bachelor's) and graduate (Master's) degree diplomas received, if official language of home country is not English.

Financial Documents:

  • Official letter or statement from a bank verifying that your sponsor has required funds to pay the total estimated expenses pr costsfor at least one year. Submit a recent, original bank letter or bank statement. Photocopies or fax copies are not acceptable. Or,
  • If you have a government or institutional scholarship: Provide an official letter from the sponsoring agency confirming the scholarship and specifying the amount of the award.
