Purdue School of Engineering and Technology

Dean's Industrial Advisory Council

Message from the Chair

Dear Industry Partners and Friends,

Five years ago, when I was invited to serve on the School of Engineering and Technology Dean’s Industrial Advisory Council (DIAC) I felt deeply honored.  As a business owner, entrepreneur, and interior design professional it made me very proud to be able serve the school at this level. During that first year, I participated in a strategic planning session led by the DIAC leadership. Since that time, I have witnessed an impressive amount of growth and evolution as the DIAC worked to implement the plan.

As DIAC members, we are focused on many aspects of the School’s relationship with business and industry. Much work has, and will continue, to be done on these important initiatives:

  • Guide the School and advise the Dean
  • Advocate for the School in industry and in the community
  • Guide the School’s investments in people and in fiscal stewardship
  • Support the delivery of instruction, the scholarship of teaching and learning, student services and advising
  • Help position the School as a pillar of the IUPUI research campus
  • Assist the School expand its role and value as an economic development mechanism
  • Aid the School in the pursuit of excellence in its core mission by advancing a culture of diversity

One thing that has become clear to me is the importance of these initiatives in guiding the work done by DIAC members. Additionally, the last three initiatives resonate as not just being strategically important to the DIAC, but equally important to the School and the community we serve.

On the research front, the recent signing of a new partnership agreement between IUPUI’s School of Engineering and Technology and Tsinghua’s Department of Automotive Engineering will lead to joint research on autonomous cars, bringing opportunity for exciting innovation in this area study.

On the economic development front, the exciting 16 Tech is currently under development directly north of the IUPUI Campus. 16 Tech is an Innovation Community primed to ignite unprecedented innovation, talent and job growth, and region-wide economic development.

On the diversity front, IUPUI Chancellor Nasser Paydar aims to increase diversity, targeting a 50 percent increase in the school's African-American population by 2020. DIAC Diversity committee began work on initiatives to recruit and retain African-American students in Engineering and Technology.

As DIAC members we will have many opportunities to support the school and Dean David Russomanno’s charge to “compete at the highest level.” I am honored and excited to serve as your 2017-18 DIAC Chair. I look forward to working with the DIAC, the School, the students, the Department Advisory Boards and all stakeholders to help shape the future of the School of Engineering and Technology, IUPUI.
