Research for BME Undergraduates

Current Student Experiences

Students in the IUPUI Department of Biomedical Engineering have access to an ever-expanding number of research opportunities. Undergraduate research is an important part of the training that Biomedical Engineering students receive at IUPUI.

Students in the IUPUI Department of Biomedical Engineering do research in laboratories across the campuses of IUPUI and the IU School of Medicine. Students apply their knowledge from the BME curriculum to work on exciting projects in a variety of different fields. Some examples of the projects that BME undergraduates work on are listed below:

  • Modeling the microenvironment and metastasis of pancreatic tumors
  • Electrospinning fibrous scaffolds for a stem cell-based approach to bone tissue engineering
  • Fabricating biomembrane-like lipid membranes to study protein sequestration and develop biomimetic cell substrates
  • Studying the relationship between molecular changes and altered mechanical properties in various diseases that affect skeletal integrity

Funding Sources

Many BME undergraduates receive funding in the form of scholarships or stipends for doing research. Funding is available for both academic year research and summer research internships. Some of the most popular funding sources for undergraduate research at IUPUI are listed below.

MURI: Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Institute

  • Sponsors academic year and summer undergraduate research
  • Small teams (3-6) of undergraduate students led by group of faculty mentors
  • Ideal for students seeking new research opportunities and collaboration on a multidisciplinary team

UROP: Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program

  • Sponsors academic year and summer undergraduate research
  • Provides a grant for ongoing research
  • Ideal for students who already work in a research lab and would like to continue with their faculty mentor

LHSI: Life Health Sciences Internships Program

  • Sponsors academic year research internships
  • Connects IUPUI undergraduates with research and/or professional experience internships on or near IUPUI's campus
  • Ideal for students interested in a formalized research internship that takes place over one academic year

As an undergraduate, some BME students begin the search for fellowship opportunities to further their education.

A great resource for getting started and exploring fellowship options can be found here.

Coordinator for Undergraduate Research

The Coordinator for Undergraduate Research is a resource for undergraduate students in BME. The Coordinator for Undergraduate Research:

  • advises undergraduate students regarding available research opportunities, funding sources, and the role of research in career development
  • seeks out new research opportunities for BME students in labs across the IUPUI and IU School of Medicine campus
  • connects undergraduate students with potential research advisors
